Gem Legacy Sends 17 Malawian Orphans Back to School

Gem Legacy Sends 17 Malawian Orphans Back to School Screen Shot 2018-10-24 at 9.52.01 AM-85National contributions raised over $2,000 to fund one year of education

Gem Legacy, a 501c3 nonprofit organization launched in 2018 and dedicated to supporting gem mining communities, has raised $2,040.48 for the Luzi Children’s Orphanage in Lilongwe, Malawi. The fund will send 17 orphans back to school through July 2019.

The orphanage was unable to pay the $75 per child per year fee for 17 of their charges, totaling $1,275. The local primary school also requires each student to attend with a uniform, bag, books, pens/pencils, and geometry tools, totaling $765 for all 17 students. Thanks to partners around the country, more than the necessary $1,955 has been raised and Gem Legacy is pleased to announce that the 17 students, ranging from age 13 to 17, will be returning to school this week after missing more than one month of school.

“Education is powerful and transformative,” said Roger Dery, President of Roger Dery Gem Design and Gem Legacy, Inc. “It opens up new opportunities and lets you dream beyond what you thought was possible! Thanks to the worldwide gem community, we are making education possible for these kids who have already experienced so much tragedy in their young lives.”
