The designer will be making a personal appearance at the KORITE booth to show off her new designs using KORITE's ammolite gem, mined in Canada
Martha Seely Design has been selected as one of several designers to create a capsule collection for KORITE, the largest supplier of the gem ammolite in the world. The designs will be on display at the JCK Show in Las Vegas, June 5-8, at Booth B15155 in the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.
Seely will be making a guest appearance at the KORITE booth on Monday, June 5, and Tuesday, June 6. The other designers whose work will be displayed are Mark Schneider, Llyn Strelau, and Bob Weinman.
"I was intrigued by the natural history of ammolite, which complements my fascination with the solar system," says Seely. Ammolite owes its existence to the iridescent fossils of squid-like, spiral shell creatures that became extinct at the same time as the dinosaurs. One dominant theory as to why dinosaurs – and a majority of marine life – died 66 million years ago was that an asteroid struck the earth causing violent climate change.
"What a perfect gemstone to use as inspiration," says Seely. "My designs pay tribute to shooting stars, nebulae, and other wonders of the galaxy – like asteroids! And not only am I a stargazer, I'm also intrigued by all the different spirals that form naturally in nature. The fact that ammolite is mined from the fossils of a spiral-shelled sea creature is further evidence that it's ideal for me."
Ammolite is mined in only one place: the province of Alberta, Canada, one of that nation's westernmost provinces. It was only recognized as an organic gemstone in 1981, when the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO) named it as such.
