Jewelers of America to Host Legislative Forum on Capitol Hill
Jewelers of America will host a Dinner & Legislative Forum on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at the prestigious Army & Navy Club in Washington, D.C. The event – open to both JA Members and non-members – will offer an insider’s perspective on the laws and regulations that affect jewelry businesses. Jewelers of America’s D.C. based legislative counsel, Haake Fetzer will host the Town Hall-style format on hot topics including sales tax fairness – with legislation recently reintroduced in the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate – jewelry-related regulations, and the proposed 20% tax hike on imports that could be part of comprehensive tax reform.

“For more than two decades, JA has been the jewelry industry’s voice in D.C. fighting for sales tax fairness and other important key legislative issues,” says JA President & CEO David J. Bonaparte. “We’re inviting jewelers to hear first-hand about our efforts, ask questions and share their own experiences. Now is an essential time to be active and aware of the regulations that directly impact our industry.”

Attendees who purchase tickets for the dinner by May 26, 2017 will get an early bird rate of $100. Tickets, which includes dinner, cocktails and the forum, will be $150 after May 26, 2017.

The dinner and legislative forum – sponsored by Richline Group and Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company – is part of JA’s annual advocacy visit to D.C., now in its 7th year. Jewelers of America first led a delegation to D.C. in 2011. Over the years, JA members have met with hundreds of lawmakers and their staff. This year’s visit comes at a key time: last month the House and Senate reintroduced sales tax fairness legislation that would level the playing field between traditional and online retailers. Additionally, the Republican-controlled Congress and Administration are eager to tackle tax reform – with key provisions – like elimination of the estate tax -- that would affect jewelry businesses.
